On Saturday, February 28th the 14U Girls – Voltage team headed east of Durham to Cobourg to play in their second 15U tournament for this season – the 15U Girls Bugarski Cup. It was a beautiful day and the athletes were looking forward to playing in a different venue. A “road-trip” of sorts was exciting.
A delay in pool play resulted in a very late start for the team. The girls began the day with a 5th place ranking. The first match of the day, saw the team play the Ravens 15U Red team. The athletes started out a little sluggish and then found their footing . They took the first set 25-15, followed by a win of 25-9. It was evident that they had come to play.
The second match against the Maverick Colts proved to be a little tougher resulting in a loss of each set, 19-25 and 13-25, leaving the team a little deflated.
The girls finished their morning with a second place finish in their Pool.
After a delicious lunch, in a very tiny lunch room, the girls were fueled and ready to enter the consolation round of play. Strong digs, power at the net and well-placed serving pushed the girls to a 25-14 win in the first set, followed by a 25-17 win in the second set. This earned them a place in the quarter finals. Things were looking up. A renewed sense of energy seemed to arise.
The first round of play in the quarter finals however proved to be a challenge as the Voltage athletes loss their spark and were defeated losing their first set 19-25 and their second with a 7-25 loss. This meant their play had come to an end.
The Voltage athletes finished the day with a 5th place finish – the same place they began. Not bad for their second performance in a 15U tournament. It was a great experience and well worth the drive to Cobourg.
A big thanks to our coaches Dan and Taylor for their commitment to our team and to all the parents who regularly support our team.
Go Voltage Go!
