Second Straight Bronze for U13 Girls Blitz

Second Straight Bronze for U13 Girls Blitz

It was another outstanding weekend for 13U Girls Blitz, as they were able to capture a second straight Bronze medal in the Champions division.

Blitz got off to a rocky start in the opening match of the tournament, as they lost in straight sets to a very steady team from Leaside. It was an excellent lesson for our team that we need to be mentally prepared and ready to fight right from the first whistle.
The girls responded well and came back in the very next match and played much better defeating DRVC 25-19, 25-21. This would place Blitz 2nd in our pool and set up a quarterfinal match with Northern Chill. As expected, Chill came out and played exceptionally well. Both sets were extremely close and went back and forth. However, our girls were equal to the task and in the end, defeated Chill in a very tight match 25-23, 25-23.
Off to the semi’s and a match up with the 6th Ranked overall team in 13U, Titans Rogue. Earlier in the season, Blitz played Rogue extremely tight, losing in 3 sets. This match would be another tight one. Titans came out swinging and used a big block to get off to an early lead. However, Blitz would not be intimidated and also came out swinging hard. The girls used some pinpoint serving and exposed an area of weakness in Titans defence to keep this match extremely tight. The first set went point for point until 23-23 when Titans were able to capture the final 2 points and win 25-23. Although this was registered as a loss, it was the best set Blitz has played this year and it showed on the faces of every player, as they knew they were involved in a great duel and gave everything they had. The second set would be another great battle. Titans again got out to an early lead, but Blitz fought back to keep it tight until mid-set. Blitz played hard and were involved in some very impressive rallies. The girls played great defence and kept things close. However, in the end, Titans would pull away and capture the set 25-16.
Now it was gut check time. After losing such a difficult semifinal match, Blitz had to dig deep, refocus and go out and fight hard for a Bronze medal. Standing in the way was Titans Wave. They also didn’t want to leave this tournament empty handed. Wave came out strong and played a great match. However, Blitz were once again a little stronger and were able to use a good mix of offensive weapons to keep Wave off balance and win a close first set 25-23. The next set would be a great example of how far our team has come and the character they have built along the way. Down 24-20 in the second set, Blitz ignored the scoreboard, played every point one play at a time and battled back to tie the set 24-24. Wave would go up once again, 25-24 but our girls were just not going to let this one slip away and once again tied it up and then sprinted ahead to stay and won the set 27-25.
This caps an outstanding regular season for Team Blitz. The girls have captured 7 medals so far, but more importantly, so many lessons learned. Character, Confidence, Work Ethic and Overall Team Skill are at a season high for Blitz and we are looking forward to executing in both 14U & 13U Provincials along with one more USA tournament.
Go Blitz!!
