ATTACK! ATTACK! ATTACK!
OI! OI! OI!
The Durham Attack 13U Red girls team won Gold at the OVA 2018 Provincial Championships held at RIM Park in Waterloo on April 22-24.
Playing in Tier 3, the team started the preliminary round on Sunday with a win and two losses. Those losses turned out to be only ones suffered by the team during the Championships.
Monday’s pool play saw the Hurricanes dispatch our rivals and friends DRVC Scott, followed by wins over South County Black and the Barrie Elites Black teams. The girls didn’t drop a single set all day.
Tuesday’s playoffs started with a convincing victory over Pakmen, followed by a semi-final defeat of the London Sharks Great Whites who put up a good fight against the Hurricanes. The Sharks would go on to lose to the Niagara Rapids Legend team in the Tier 3 bronze medal match.
The gold medal match against the EVP Eagles Black team from Oakville was perhaps the Hurricanes’ finest performance of the entire season: a comprehensive 25-14, 25-12 victory that was never in doubt. Following the medal ceremony the team held one final, and joyous, team dinner at their usual restaurant in Whitby.
The Hurricanes entered the Championships seeded 24th and ended the competition ranked 17th in Ontario.
Twelve talented girls came together over the season to form a single team with a single purpose: win gold at Provincials. Their success on one of the biggest stages in Canadian volleyball is a tribute both to their commitment to the sport and to the mentorship provided by the coaching staff of Brian Bouma, Celeste Hardy and Jay Kerr.
On to 14U in the fall!
