Girls 16U Black take Gold and Silver in First Two Tournaments of 2015/16!
The season started out great for the Durham Attack 16U Girls Black team – with a Gold medal in the first tournament of the year on November 14th playing up in 17U Provincial Cup. Because the team didn’t play in the 17U Provincials last year, they were placed in Trillium F division for the first 17U tournament, which was a nice way to start the tournament season without facing the toughest competition. The first game was a bit of a slow start… falling behind 17-4 at one point to Northumberland Breakers, but with a big comeback won the first set 25-22, and found their fire in the second set, winning 25-17, with the fans cheering like crazy, excited to see their amazing team playing again! A couple of easy wins in the next two games (25-10, 25-9 vs. Uxbridge Cosmos, and 25-6, 25-13 vs. Evolution Green 16U) led to Quarter finals vs. 16U DRVC who played well and were a stronger challenge than expected, but the girls fought for the win with a 25-19 first set, and a tight 27-25 second set. Semi-finals were against the #1 seed in the pool Evolution 17U, who put up a good challenge in the first set 27-25, but our girls dominated in the second 25-12, moving them on to their first Gold medal match of the season – facing Northumberland Breakers again. Due to the 10-team division, the match didn’t begin until almost 7:00pm, and the girls were tired and struggled a bit. The first set was a point-for-point battle until 12-12, then NBVC pulled ahead to 21-17, but our girls didn’t give up and fought back to 24-23 and the luck went their way with the Breakers gave up the winning point on an error. The girls made a few errors in the second set but held onto the lead all the way, winning 25-20 for the Gold Medal! Long day but a great feeling to hold that gold!
The second tournament of the season for 16U Girls Black was the 16U Provincial Cup on November 21/15– where they were seeded #1 in Championship East division. The field was a little more challenging than the first tournament – the first set of game 1 vs. NBVC was very close, with our girls squeezing out the win 29-27, but once they got going and relaxed into it, NBVC didn’t stand a chance in the second set, losing 25-6. In Game 2 vs. DRVC put up a good fight, keeping within a couple of points until our girls pulled ahead to win in two straight sets 25-17, 25-20.
The girls were excited to be able to put on a good show in the quarter and semi-finals for our special guest Martin Cooperwaite of Kiandra IT, the team’s very special sponsor all the way from Australia! Scarborough Titans Dynasty didn’t give much of a challenge in the quarters, losing 25-8, 25-10, and Maverick Wildcards did pose some more exciting competition in the semi, but our girls were smiling and working well together and tidily took the win 25-19, 25-18.
Excited to be in their second straight Gold medal match of the season, the girls found themselves facing Scarborough Titans, who have been one of their fiercest rivals over the last 3 years. The Titans were in fact fierce, with tough serving, the best hitting the team had seen so far this year, and returning most of our hardest balls. Titans took the match 25-13, 25-17… a bit of a disappointing result, but still a Silver Medal win.
Gold and Silver for the first two tournaments of the year… well done 16U Black girls!
