After a strong OVA season the 13U Durham Attack Black Nightmares entered the 2016 13U Provincials ranked eighth in Ontario. Struggling with several late-season injuries and missing Kyla, the team dug deep and left it all on the court.
With a slow start in Match 1 on Friday morning, the girls rallied to defeat the 9th seeded Woodstock Warriors in three (25-22, 22-25, 15-9). Match 2 brought the Nightmares up against our sister team, the Durham Attack Red Flare, and we were pumped. The club rivalry propelled us to a convincing win, (25-20, 25-14), giving us momentum heading into the much anticipated third match against Halton Hurricanes Black, #1 seed overall. The match started with a 19-25 loss, but the girls regrouped and seized game two by a score of 25-20. Giving up is not something the Black Nightmares do and with the relentless effort their fans have become accustomed to, the girls fought to the last point, but were unable to hold on to game three (11-15). Day 1 was full of wow moments including a huge hit from Julia, body sacrificing digs by Jamie and Sadie and Paige’s reliable setting and serving we’ve been amazed by all season. Friday volleyball was done, but the teambuilding continued with door decorating, Swiss Chalet ordered in and a scavenger hunt that had the girls asking every family for something – shout out to Sarah for organizing the fun activities.
Re-pooling results generated a very challenging Saturday schedule bringing DA Black up against the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th placed teams. First up, Markham Revolution Merge, and again with a sluggish start to the day, DA pushed the match to three games, but lost the decider, (13-25, 25-10, 8-15). The Scarborough Titans Synergy stole two games straight from us (10-25, 18-25), while it took the Etobicoke Titans Rhea three to put us on the wrong side of the score card once more, (23-25, 25-10, 8-15). Despite Saturday’s outcome, DA Nightmares proved they belonged on the same court with these teams. Highlights of the day included Kate and Brianna slamming down some key hits, Peyton and Taya throwing up some big blocks and Simona’s countless diving saves. With heads held high, the girls returned to the hotel for an incredibly organized Mexican night, complete with costumes, games and Mexican grub – big thanks to Lisa for planning it all, to Sarah for the games, especially the nacho eating contest, and to everyone who contributed – MUCHAS GRACIAS!!!
Sunday’s bracket was set, with a win against the 21st seed, Halton Hurricanes Blue DA Black Nightmares were off to the quarter finals. Recognizing Friday and Saturdays slow starts, the coaches did some extra warm-up (or maybe wake-up) drills with the girls which proved successful and DA defeated the Blue Hurricanes 25-17 and 25-20. This win lined us up against Halton Hurricanes Black, #1 seed, who Nightmares had already played on Friday. The girls showed their determination and fight and in true Nightmare style, gave the top team a scare, but lost a nail biter in 3 games (10-25, 25-23, 11-15). Sunday was full of outstanding play from all the girls including Briar pulling out the pistol with some scary smashes and Breann topping off her all-star weekend with more big hits, blocks and digs.
The 13U Durham Attack Black Nightmare team finished tied for fifth in all of Ontario, developed as a team and individually and built lifelong friendships – that’s what I’d call a successful season, and with nothing to lose they head to 14U Nationals in Ottawa May 6-8. GO ‘SCARE’ THEM NIGHTMARES!
