17U Can-Am Tournament
January 18 & 19th, 2014
We came, we saw and they conquered!
Congratulations to the Durham Attack 17U Boys Black, who this past weekend travelled south of the 49th parallel to compete in the Can-Am Volleyball Tournament in Rochester, New York. Of 27 teams registered, four were from Ontario, one was from Quebec and the other 22 came from throughout the United States.
Congratulations are in order because, two days of very challenging competition resulted in our boys playing no fewer than 8 games of very intense ball on their way to collecting the gold medal in their division. The boys took 1st place in Saturday’s pool play action, which consisted of three games against some very strong American clubs. They dropped only one extremely hard fought set 25 -27 in the last game against a team from N.Carolina, before regrouping to take the tiebreaker 15-12.
Day two was more of a nail biter, as the boys got off to a slow start, dropping their 1st two (close) contests, before the fog lifted and the direction to the final prize became clear once again. Those losses were something of a wake up call, because from then on Durham Attack played as a team possessed. The boys became more engaged and focused, capitalizing on their opponents’ mistakes, and making few of their own, in the process. Durham’s blocking….noticeably absent the first two games, once again became an almost impenetrable wall of defence. Their service game was another area that witnessed continued improvement as the day progressed, so that by the final game, only one missed serve was recorded. And the icing on the cake – or in this case Gold Medal? Our Durham boys got to deal a little payback; 25-17 & 25-21, to one of the teams that had defeated them in the morning’s match ups.
Three cheers for the Silver Division Champions! You’ve done not only yourselves, but your club, and Canada, proud.
