The Attack 16U Red Girls headed to Pittsburgh on the first weekend in March to take part in the “Steeltown Smash”, part of the Northwest Power series of tournaments.
Their highly-succesful weekend got off to a strong start on Saturday with a string of victories in pool play, beating City Strong 16 Gold, Adrenaline 16 Blue and Pgh Elite 16 Gold. The Attack girls took all three games in straight sets and headed into the next round with confidence running high.
They built on that Sunday, where they faced Keystone VBC 16 Green in the Challenge match. Again the DA girls were able to take the game in two sets, 25-15, 25-11. That sent them to the Gold Bracket of play where they would fight for top spot overall in the tournament.
In the Gold bracket quarterfinals, the Red girls faced the only other Canadian team at the event, Hamilton Smash 16U Purple. The all-Canadian affair was neck-and-neck through two sets, but in both cases DA was able to pull out front at just the right moment, and took the sets 25-21, 25-23.
Up next was the semi-final and another team from Pgh Elite. This time it was a very strong 15U squad and they took the Attack girls to three sets for the first time all weekend. But DA prevailed, taking the game 25-20, 23-25, 15-8 to send the girls to the gold medal match.
That’s where they met up with Penn Highlands 16 Red. And the Attack girls returned to their straight-set winning ways, taking the sets 25-19, 25-22 and claiming the 16U Championship and their first gold medal of the season.
Our thanks to Jess and Hunter from the DA Black team for making the trip with us and helping reinforce things at a time of illness and injury for the Red squad!
Head Coach Mackenzie Coyle says the coaching staff is “excited to have such a positive result heading into our last tournament of the season and the entire team is looking to repeat their gold medal winning performance there and at both provincial tournaments in April.”
