It was an exciting day of close matches for the 15U Girls Team Invasion at the McGregor Cup in Uxbridge. The team started strong in pool play, beating the Clarington Grizzlies in two sets with matching scores of 25-16 and 25-16. They then faced the Durham Rebels Destroyers (winners of the gold medal) and lost to the team 12-25 and 13-25.
Placing second in their pool, they had a break for lunch before playing more back-to-back games with only seven players able to take the court. The girls showed that all their practice had helped them build up their stamina since the beginning of the season. In the pre-quarters, they faced the North Bay Lakers in an exciting match-up that had the teams go point for point in a very close game. They pulled out a win in three sets with scores of 22-25, 25-23 and 17-15.
In the quarter-finals, the girls came so close to making it to the medal rounds with another tight match-up. This time the points went back and forth between Durham Attack and West Nipissing Wild. It was another very close match that went to three sets but unfortunately this time Team Invasion lost 25-22, 19-25, 11-15.
In the last game of the day, the girls faced PVC Hurricanes and played for fifth place. Despite playing multiple three-set matches beforehand, they still had their energy level up and were able to defeat the Hurricanes in two sets. It was the 15th birthday for one of the teammates, and she managed an exciting finish serving for the win to cap off a great tournament.
There weren’t any medals, but there were birthday cupcakes and smiles as the girls showed that their hard work is starting to pay off.
