Wow!!! Over the weekend the Spitfires showed those Americans (and Canadians!) how good they can be. Coming in ranked 16th out of 20 for the tournament, the boys lost their first two games against tough Oakville Thunder and Rochester Bootlegger teams. They finished off Saturday by beating Niagara Frontier in 3 hard-fought sets.
On Sunday, that blanket of snow must have energized everyone, because they didn’t lose until the final game of the day. Beating Lehigh and CSVC, both in two sets, secured them a spot in the silver medal bracket. In the bracket quarterfinals, it took three sets to eliminate a strong Cleveland Phoenix team – who likely beat us home because the Spitfires had a lot more volleyball to play! Our boys came together in their semi-final against Syracuse, and it only took two sets (25-13,25-21) to secure a spot in the silver medal bracket final.
Despite a snowstorm blowing outside, playing four games that day and, let’s face it – not eating super healthy for that weekend in Rochester, your DA Spitfires came out strong in the final. Against a large, formidable BRYC squad from Virginia, they had it tied 19-19 in the first half. They eventually lost in the final (22-25,19-25) and with heads held high accepted their silver medal bracket runner-up medals – a little something to declare when crossing back into Canada. On the first of 3 consecutive weekend tournaments, they left with hardware and jumped from 16th to 9th in the tournament rankings. Go, Spitfires!!!
