• 13U Nightmares – Busy Start to the New Year

The Durham Attack Girls 13U Black Nightmares started 2016 off with a busy, but successful January.  It all started on January 9th with a 13U tournament at Bishop Strachan School in Toronto followed by a 14U tournament in Markham on January 23rd.  To round out the month, the team participated in a team building day and exhibition game against the Aurora Storm at Humber College.

The team’s hard work at practice and in the gym was apparent on Jan. 9th when they defeated the Niagara Rapids Blue (25-22, 25-15) and Durham Attack Red Thunder (25-13, 25-17) in straight sets during round robin play.  Our winning streak carried over into the crossovers and semi-finals, beating Leaside and Markham Revolution Black despite the fire alarm and 30 minute evacuation – luckily it was a false alarm!  The final game of the 13U tournament got started around 7pm and the Nightmares gave it their all, but fell short to Markham Revolution Merge.  It was a long day and the girls earned every ounce of their SILVER MEDALS!

With a weekend’s rest and proving themselves in two previous 14U tournaments, the 13U Nightmares earned a spot in their first 14U Championship Level tournament.  The girls were up to the challenge and showed that this is where they belong.  In a pool of four teams, we split all three round robin matches playing Ottawa Mavericks, DRVC and Kingston Pegasus.  We won our first crossover match to reach the semi-finals with an incredible comeback in the second set taking it 25-23 after being down 20-10!  The first set of the semis was super exciting to watch and could have went either way, but Aurora Storm scraped out a 25-23 win. The Nightmares faced some powerful servers in the second set and with a second set loss found themselves up against the 14U Durham Attack Red Team in the Bronze Medal match.  With another tight first set and a good fight in the second, the coaches and parents were extremely proud of the girl’s fourth place finish.

January was topped off at Humber College with an exciting “Day with the Humber Hawks”.  Invited by the 13U Aurora Storm team, the Nightmares participated in a serving skills contest and exhibition game against Aurora in the impressive college gymnasium.  The game was taped and streamed live on YouTube for all to watch these promising athletes.  After the match, a Humber College representative gave the players and coaches a tour of Humber’s Athletic Complex and talked about the variety of sports available at the school.  Finally, the girls and family members were treated to a pizza lunch and court-side seats to watch the Ladies Humber Hawks win their 100th straight match!  It was a fantastic day and an amazing opportunity for these young athletes to see what they can achieve with constant effort and commitment.

It will be hard to match, but stay tuned to see what February brings for the DA Girls 13U Black Nightmares!
