13U Girls Blitz Wins Gold at 14U Bugraski Cup

13U Girls Blitz Wins Gold at 14U Bugraski Cup

Coming off a hard fought Bronze medal on Feb 2nd 2019, Blitz hit the court again this past weekend, competing at the 14U Bugarski Cup in Peterborough.  First up in pool play, the Lindsey Invasion. The team from Lindsey came out ready to play and performed extremely well, however, Blitz would prove to be too strong and took this match in straight sets 25-18 and 25-7.

Next up, Storm Typhoon, the 9th Ranked 13 U team in the Province. This would prove to be a battle. Storm came out strong in the first set and took it to the Blitz, winning 25 -19.  Once again, the Storm came out confident and strong, however, the girls were eager to show that they were not the same team that lost to Storm back in November. Blitz came out firing in set 2 and relied on some very timely serving to take the set 25-21 setting up an exciting 3rd set. The girls regrouped and made the necessary adjustments identifying areas of weakness and attacked the Storm right from the opening whistle, winning the third set 15-9.

The girls finished first in their pool and opened up the first round of the playoffs by dominating the Kawartha Krushers.  Kawartha are tall, strong team but had lots of difficulty handling the serves from Blitz. The girls never looked back, winning the opening round match in straight sets. 25-10 and 25-9.

Now off to the Semi’s!!  Blitz were matched against a very energized well organized team, Markham Unity. Unity came out strong and got off to a large lead in the first set, requiring Blitz to gather themselves and recompose. Once again, some very timely serving and strong hitting, allowed Blitz to get back into the set and continue to push forward taking a very close 25-23 decision. Set 2 would be more of the same. Markham came out strong, again requiring Blitz to dig deep and fight back and take another close-set 26-24. This match really emphasized how much Blitz have grown as a team this season. Their never quit attitude carried them to victory!

The finals pitted the top 2 seeds in the tournament against each other. The girls play the number 1 seeds from Peterborough for Gold.  The first set was a back forth battle with both teams playing point for point. However, Peterborough was able to put together a string of impressive jump serves providing them the necessary gap they needed to win set one, 25-22. Once again, the mental fortitude of the girls was tested. The girls showed everyone what they were made of and were not ready to let the gold medal match slip through their fingers, battling back to win the second set 25-19. In the third and deciding set, the girls proved to be the fitter and stronger team. Playing the 3rd and final set like it was the first match of the day. They took it to Peterborough from the opening whistle. Never looking back and dominated Peterborough, winning the 3rd set 15-8.

This was the last 14U OVA tournament of the season for Blitz and they are very happy to have won both a Gold and Silver medal this year playing up in the 14U division.

 Go Blitz!
